A truly engaging, enjoyable and satisfying performance which serves some sort of purpose and reason comes from a collaborative process involving and developing from more than just movement. Dance can be a beautiful element within a performance, or it can be used to mould together a whole piece. I am a choreographer committed to making dynamic performances which explore the potential of the human body and makes visible the collaborative processes between performance-makers.
The relationship between sound and movement. My main interest is to develop and explore the idea that movement can be heard and sound can be seen. How can these be combined, interlocked and merged together, instead of just complimenting each other throughout a performance.
Watching movement to music performances can enhance the listeners experience of the music they are listening to and channel there vision to focus on a certain element of the music (e.g. cultural aspect - certain dance is performed to certain styles of music)/or to add a different focus.
During my development and training as a dancer I developed an interest for choreography, becoming curious of how I could create movement-based dance work, rather than performing other peoples movement ideas. The curiosity and continuity that dancers bring to their practice is something that I feel should be present within choreography, and therefore something I like to focus on when creating work. Movement from internal places within the body, and the natural spirals, twists and shapes that human bodies can make inspire my ideas, concepts and movement material.
I actively invite collaboration when creating dance work, such as working with musicians, film artists or lighting designers. I also teach dance and provide creative dance sessions to children; I believe that creative thinking and play is vital to children's development and their understanding of the world, so providing more creativity for children during their education will help them to develop their knowledge and understanding of certain situations within their education setting.
Graduating Falmouth University with a First Class Honours degree in the subject of Choreography , I began to study at Laban from September 2014 for a Masters in Choreography. I now mainly work with musicians and sound artists, creating movement to either to compliment their music, or with them in collaboration with other artists.
